Divorces can be bitter and messy -- and the split between Legendary Pictures, an independent production arm, and big-time studio Warner Bros. is proving to be outrageously contentious.
After pushing "Seventh Son" back from a February 2013 slot to October, and then dumping it in the dog days of January 2014, Warner Bros. has passed the film to Legendary's new distribution partner, Universal. No new release date has been scheduled.
For a while it looked like Legendary and Warner Bros. were in a pretty great place, with the two co-producing Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy and partnering on such big summer fare as "Man of Steel" and "Pacific Rim." But now that the financing/distribution relationship has faltered, it has left a number of projects to be sorted out, including "300: Rise of an Empire" and next summer's "Godzilla."
"Seventh Son," a goofy medieval fantasy romp starring Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore, appears to be an unwanted stepchild. It should be out sometime in 2014.
In other Legendary news, the production company has given up its stake in the "Man of Steel" sequel (set to feature Batman) in exchange for a percentage of Christopher Nolan's new sci-fi mindbender "Interstellar."
It's rumored that Legendary will be presenting a number of new projects to Universal in the coming weeks, to see if they are on board to distribute. Among these films are "Warcraft," based on the "World of Warcraft" video games (conceptual footage of which was previewed during the joint Warner Bros./Legendary panel at Comic-Con just a few weeks ago), and "Cyber," the Michael Mann-directed techno thriller starring Chris Hemsworth.
