According to Nikki Finke, who broke the story, the "twist" is that Little Matty (the little boy from the first two films) is now 29 and gay and getting married to a Navy SEAL's son. Oh man, can you imagine the hilarity? Martin will definitely return as the titular father, and we can't imagine that original costars Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams, Martin Short and BD Wong won't be far behind. It would also be cool if Kieran Culkin, who has grown into a fine actor himself (just watch him in "Margaret" or "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World"), came back to play Matty.
Finke reports that Charles Shyer, who directed the first two films and co-wrote them with his then-wife Nancy Meyers (who Finke says passed on the project), will be back to helm the third film.
You know, as far as unnecessary sequels go, this could be pretty cute. The first two were warm and funny and featured great, mostly grounded performances by its cast. (Remember Martin freaking out about the number of hotdog buns? Classic.) We'll remain cautiously optimistic about this one, especially if they can wrangle the rest of the cast back.
