Nick Cave's 'Gladiator 2' Screenplay: Rocker Wanted to Call It 'Christ Killer'

Russell Crowe in 'Gladiator'

Nick Cave, the Australian rocker and occasional screenwriter and composer, once wrote a screenplay for the sequel to "Gladiator," Russell Crowe's Oscar-winning action movie set in ancient Rome. This screenplay has become the stuff of legend, since it was so flatly rejected and nothing ever became of the project. It was rumored to contain fantasy elements, as a way of bringing Crowe's deceased Maximus back from the dead, but few specifics ever emerged -- until now.

While speaking with Marc Maron on the comedian's "WTF" podcast (via Clash Music), Cave revealed the circumstances of his getting hired by fellow countryman Crowe. "[Crowe] rang me up and asked if I wanted to write 'Gladiator 2,'" he began. "For someone who had only written one film script, it was quite an ask. 'Hey, Russell, didn't you die in 'Gladiator 1'?' 'Yeah, you sort that out.'"

Cave sorted it out, all right, and his solution was unique. "So, [Maximus] goes down to purgatory and is sent down by the gods, who are dying in heaven because there's this one god, there's this Christ character, down on Earth who is gaining popularity and so the many gods are dying so they send Gladiator back to kill Christ and his followers," he explained.

"I wanted to call it 'Christ Killer,'" he continued. "And in the end you find out that the main guy was his son so he has to kill his son and he was tricked by the gods. He becomes this eternal warrior and it ends with this 20-minute war scene which follows all the wars in history, right up to Vietnam and all that sort of stuff and it was wild. It was a stone-cold masterpiece. I enjoyed writing it very much because I knew on every level that it was never going to get made. Let's call it a popcorn dropper."

A popcorn dropper indeed. What do you think the general response would have been had "Christ Killer" been the follow-up to the critically acclaimed crowd-pleaser? If only Crowe had been as fearless when it came to making the sequel as he was when hiring Cave.

If you want to read the "stone-cold masterpiece," you don't have to look too far.

'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom' Poster

This couldn't come at a more bittersweet moment: Just a few weeks after Nelson Mandela was hospitalized in Pretoria, the first teaser trailer has debuted for the upcoming biographical film about the South African luminary, "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom." And even with very little actual footage shown, the movie looks stirring and inspirational.

The trailer starts off with text ("It only takes one man to change the world"), followed by a panoramic shot of Mandela, played by "Pacific Rims"'s Idris Elba, walking along a field, followed by small children.

As the moment plays out, Elba-as-Mandela narrates, "I have walked a long walk to freedom. It has been a long road and it is not over yet. No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin. People learn to hate; they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart." By the end of the trailer, you'll have a pretty big lump lodged in your throat.

Mandela, the former South African president and anti-apartheid revolutionary who was jailed for most of his adult life, has previously been portrayed by Morgan Freeman in Clint Eastwood's "Invictus." This new film, directed by British actor and filmmaker Justin Chadwick, also stars Naomie Harris, Tony Kgoroge, Riaad Moosa, and Jamie Bartlett.

The trailer is British, so it advertises an early January release date, but the Weinstein Company will be rolling the film out domestically on November 29, just in time for Oscar season.

Moviefone Live!
The choice of what movie to see this weekend may be easy for some people: If you like tongue-in-cheek, low-brow comedy then "Grown Ups 2" is for you. If big action is your thing, go see "Pacific Rim."

But, for moviegoers who are indifferent to either genre and just want to be entertained, Moviefone is giving you the lowdown on which new flick is worth your time.

Mr. Moviefone, along with Moviefone writer Drew Taylor, sat down with HuffPost Live host Jacob Soboroff to discuss this weekend's big releases, as well as the smaller, Steve Carrell-starring movie "The Way, Way Back."

Race for 'Hot Wheels' Director Enters Final Lap

Juan Carlos Fresnadilla

First, let's get something out of the way: Yes, there is a "Hot Wheels" movie coming very soon, and yes, it is based on the tiny Matchbox toys by Mattel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the race for the director's seat has been narrowed to two candidates: Simon Crane, a second-unit director who has worked frequently with Brad Pitt, and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (above), who directed "28 Weeks Later" and the Clive Owen movie "Intruders." So, who will cross the finish line and get the gig?

Art Marcum and Matt Holloway penned the screenplay for "Hot Wheels," which is said to be more in the vein of "Mission: Impossible" than the phenomenally successful "Fast & Furious" franchise. To be produced by Legendary and released under the company's new agreement with Universal, the movie will likely get underway in the first part of 2014.

Crane also serves as one of Hollywood's premier stunt coordinators, and Fresnadillo is currently attached to direct "Villain," a thriller with Shia LaBeouf.

Maybe an even larger question than who will be installed as the director is whether the script features a sequence involving a giant, twisting plastic ramp. That has to be a given, right?

Aubrey Plaza on 'To Do List' Sex Scenes: 'It Was a Nightmare'

Aubrey Plaza in 'The To Do List'

Aubrey Plaza had to go where she'd never gone before as an actress for her upcoming comedy "The To Do List," a raunchy coming-of-age affair about a goody-goody high school valedictorian -- "Plaza's version of Tracy Flick from 'Election,'" per writer-director Maggie Carey -- who's on a mission to tick off a bucket list of sexual escapades the summer before college.

For the movie, Plaza had to film her first sex scene, as well as other simulated activities. (The bucket list is very thorough.)

Speaking with the New York Times, Plaza described the faux-bedroom scenes as "a nightmare," though she was apparently "smiling broadly" while saying that, so either they weren't so terrible, or she was channeling her sarcastic "Parks and Recreation" character April Ludgate at the time. "I was like, this is the weirdest acting job I've ever had in my life," she concluded.

But she appreciates the underlying feminist message -- that the horny teen landscape isn't limited to just guys. "Girls learn how to masturbate, too; we just haven't seen it before," Plaza said matter-of-factly.

Maggie Carey expanded on that, explaining that Plaza's character isn't out for anything more than a good time. "It wasn't about love, she wasn't looking to get married, she was just like, 'He is hot,'" she said. "Women have those feelings as much as men. You don't see it a lot in this genre of movie, so that was important to me."

Carey emphasized, "[T]his is not a romantic comedy, this is a comedy-comedy."

"The To Do List" also stars Carey's husband Bill Hader, Scott Porter, Alia Shawkat, Rachel Bilson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Andy Samberg, and Donald Glover. Plaza begins checking off X-rated items when the comedy hits theaters July 26.

'Grandmaster'

Gorgeous cinematography? Check. Jump cuts and slo-mo? Check. Longing, lovelorn glances? Check. Chinese director Wong Kar-Wai's distinctive style is as present as ever in the new American trailer for his martial arts biopic "The Grandmaster."

The film stars Tony Leung (a frequent Wong collaborator) as Ip Man, the kung fu master who trained Bruce Lee. During the Japanese invasion of 1936, he clashes with Gong Er (Zhang Ziyi), a trained master in her own right.

The trailer showcases several dazzling fight sequences choreographed by Yuen Woo-Ping ("The Matrix," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"), including a balletic sequence in the rain. "Before he trained legends, he had to become one," the trailer's voiceover intones.

"The Grandmaster" opened in China earlier this year and kicks into U.S. movie theaters on August 23.

'How To Train Your Dragon 2' Trailer: Plunge Into the Action

'How to Train Your Dragon' Poster

"How to Train Your Dragon" was a pretty important film for DreamWorks Animation in 2010. Not only was it a huge smash, earning over $500 million worldwide, but it proved that DreamWorks Animation features didn't have to rely heavily on lazy gross-out humor and pop-culture references to succeed at the box office. Thankfully, by the looks of this first gorgeous trailer for "How to Train Your Dragon 2," out next summer, the commitment to quality has remained.

The trailer features Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), now noticeably older, riding his pet dragon Toothless. He has some armor on, plus a nifty mask/helmet combo, and his missing leg from the end of the first movie is still missing (such a ballsy decision, even now). He glides over the water, over sea-dwelling dragons exposing their tails and fins, and then boy and dragon ascend into the clouds, where Hiccup untangles himself from Toothless and dives toward earth. In a triumphant moment, he extends his arms and begins to soar like a flying squirrel. If you aren't choked up by the time the clip finishes, you're probably an android.

Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the first film with his "Lilo & Stitch" partner Chris Sanders, is directing "How to Train Your Dragon 2" solo, though when Moviefone talked to Sanders earlier this year for "The Croods," he said he was going to do some storyboards and check in. Much of the cast, including Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jonah Hill, T.J. Miller, and Kristen Wiig, is set to return, with "Game of Thrones"'s Kit Harington in talks to voice the villain.

'Pacific Rim' Opens With Promising Thursday Night Box Office

$

Will there be another surprise blockbuster this summer?

After the better-than-expected box office for Brad Pitt's "World War Z," it looks like the Guillermo del Toro-directed "Pacific Rim" is poised for a big weekend as well.

The robots vs. monsters sci-fi movie opened to $3.6 million in late Thursday night screenings -- matching numbers posted by "World War Z" a few weeks ago. That figure is ahead of predictions by studio Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures.

Of course, as Variety notes, "Decent midnight grosses, since they're often so heavily fanboy driven, rarely paint an accurate picture as to just how big an upside the film will earn. But if a film craters with late-nights, it's doomed to underperform. That won't be the case with 'Pacific Rim.'"

If "Pacific Rim" can keep it up, it may come close to "World War Z"'s opening weekend haul of $66.4 million. If, though, is the operative word. Adam Sandler's new comedy, "Grown Ups 2," also performed well on Thursday night, grossing $2.3 million, and is still expected to match or beat its big-budget competition.

ben stiller cameron diaz theres something about mary

It's hard to believe it's been 15 years since Ben Stiller famously snagged his "franks and beans" in a zipper, but "There's Something About Mary" did, in fact, first grace theaters on July 15, 1998.

While the movie starred a few actors who still remain on Hollywood's A-list, there are some other "Mary" players who took a step away from the spotlight.

To celebrate the classic Farrelly brothers flick that taught men to zip with caution, officially launched Cameron Diaz's star, and gave new meaning to the word infatuation, here's a look at what the cast of "There's Something About Mary" is up to now.

'Ender's Game' Controversy: Lionsgate Affirms Support for LGBT Community

$

With backlash building against the upcoming sci-fi movie "Ender's Game," Lionsgate is finally addressing the controversy surrounding author Orson Scott Card's anti-gay marriage beliefs.

The writer of the 1985 sci-fi book has come under fire for his opposition to same-sex marriage, with some groups vowing to boycott the film adaptation. Now, Lionsgate is distancing itself from the author, saying it does "not agree with the personal views of Orson Scott Card." The studio also plans to hold a benefit premiere to support LGBT causes.

Card's views are of long-standing origin. He is a member of the National Organization for Marriage, which is against same-sex unions, and has written essays in The Deseret News and the Mormon Times opposing gay marriage.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly earlier this week, Card called the issue "moot" after the Supreme Court's recent ruling against parts of the Defense of Marriage Act. He also asked gay marriage supporters to "show tolerance toward those who disagreed with them when the issue was still in dispute."

Here's the full statement from Lionsgate:

As proud longtime supporters of the LGBT community, champions of films ranging from GODS AND MONSTERS to THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER and a Company that is proud to have recognized same-sex unions and domestic partnerships within its employee benefits policies for many years, we obviously do not agree with the personal views of Orson Scott Card and those of the National Organization for Marriage. However, they are completely irrelevant to a discussion of ENDER'S GAME. The simple fact is that neither the underlying book nor the film itself reflect these views in any way, shape or form. On the contrary, the film not only transports viewers to an entertaining and action-filled world, but it does so with positive and inspiring characters who ultimately deliver an ennobling and life-affirming message. Lionsgate will continue its longstanding commitment to the LGBT community by exploring new ways we can support LGBT causes and, as part of this ongoing process, will host a benefit premiere for ENDER'S GAME.

'Sweetwater' Trailer: January Jones Strips Down and Shoots 'Em Up

January Jones at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival

January Jones ditches her "Mad Men" trappings in "Sweetwater," a crazy-looking Western about a woman hell-bent on revenge.

Jones plays Sarah, a beautiful widow whose signature look is a bright purple dress, a painted face, and a smoking revolver in her hand. After her husband is killed by a neighboring religious nutjob named Prophet Josiah, Sarah sets all her stuff on fire (or so we can assume from this trailer) and gets cracking on her mission to hunt down and kill everyone involved.

Ed Harris also stars as the new sheriff in town. He's got unorthodox methods and a shady past, but who doesn't? There's definitely something wrong with Josiah (Jason Isaacs) and his merry band of acolytes, and Sarah has her own colorful past, too.

Originally known as "Sweet Vengeance," "Sweetwater" has a kooky, pulpy vibe to the trailer, complete with stylized credits and plenty of bullet holes. (Which is to say, yes, the trailer is violent.)

Twin brothers Logan and Noah Miller wrote and directed the film, which premiered at Sundance. "We wondered if audiences are going to accept that January just takes out everybody, even people who only slightly wronged her," Logan told Entertainment Weekly. "So far, the audiences have been enthusiastic, cheering when she kills the first guy."

"Sweetwater" doesn't have a U.S. distributor or release date as of yet, but maybe this eye-catching trailer will change that.

'Asthma': Krysten Ritter to Rock Out in Dustin Hoffman's Son's Directorial Debut

Krysten Ritter

It hasn't taken Krysten Ritter long to bounce back from the cancellation of her sharp show "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23."

After years of playing the snarky sidekick, she's started snagging bigger roles in upcoming films like Tim Burton's "Big Eyes" and the adaptation of "Veronica Mars." The latest movie she's signed on for is the curiously named indie "Asthma."

"Asthma" marks the directorial debut of Jake Hoffman, son of Dustin. The younger Hoffman is turning his lens on "the consequences of the live fast, die young mentality in NYC's indie rock scene," which doesn't give us a whole lot of information (especially since it's debatable what constitutes the "indie rock scene" in New York City these days). Albert Hammond Jr. from The Strokes will be appearing as himself, so we could guess "Asthma" takes place in the early '00s.

Ritter's a delight as an undead babe in Amy Heckerling's "Vamps"; she entranced us and Jesse Pinkman in "Breaking Bad"; and she charmed us in "Veronica Mars." Let's hope the actress gets to take a big bite out of this indie.

'The Best Man Holiday' Trailer: Friends Forever

After 13 years, everything's changed and nothing's changed for the friends of "The Best Man."

Original cast members Taye Diggs, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Harold Perrineau, and Terrence Howard reunite for the romantic comedy's holiday-themed sequel, "The Best Man Holiday." And as a new trailer shows, the longtime friends are older -- with Lathan sporting a huge baby bump -- though perhaps not wiser.

"It's Christmas, and I'm willing to give and I'm willing to receive," Howard's womanizing Quentin says of a rather indecent proposal.

The best part of the trailer? A sexy lip-synched performance by the men to New Edition's "Can You Stand the Rain." No wonder one of the women flings her underwear at them!

Also starring Monica Calhoun, Regina Hall, Melissa De Sousa, and Eddie Cibrian, "The Best Man Holiday" opens November 15.

Shirtless Zach Braff Solicits 'Magic Mike 2' Role on Twitter

Zach Braff

Zach Braff is ready to shake his moneymaker.

Just a few months after turning to Kickstarter to crowdfund his upcoming movie "Wish I Was Here," the follow-up to his 2004 directorial debut "Garden State," the actor has taken to Twitter in pursuit of something a little sexier.

We certainly wouldn't mind watching Braff get nearly naked alongside Channing Tatum, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Matthew McConaughey, and the rest of the "Magic Mike" male stripper crew, though -- let's be real -- Braff's no Tatum when the shirts come off.

While the former "Scrubs" star is just kidding (we assume), "Magic Mike 2" would allow him to flex his comedic muscles. "It will be a road-trip movie, and it will essentially be the movie that everyone thought the first one was going to be: crazy and fun and less slice-of-life and less drama," Tatum told The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview. "The first one, we had to make not so cheesy and campy; this one we are going to swing for the fences."

In between taking shirtless selfies and filming "Wish I Was Here," which co-stars Kate Hudson, Mandy Patinkin, Joey King, Anna Kendrick, Donald Faison, and Jim Parsons, the ever-busy Braff recently found the time to shoot an adorable cameo for a proposal video for one of his Kickstarter donors.

For that alone, Braff deserves a man thong. Get on it, Tatum!

Girl Most Likely- Clip No.1Kinky Kristen? Not so much.

In an exclusive clip from "Girl Most Likely," the latest comedy starring Kristen Wiig, the funnywoman has a hilariously awkward conversation with her mother, played by Annette Bening.

The film follows Imogene (Wiig), a playwright who fakes suicide to get the attention of her ex only to end up in an even worse position: living with her gambler mother Zelda (Bening). Bening is dating a seemingly pathological liar who goes by the name George Bush (Matt Dillion) and renting out Imogene's old bedroom to young charmer Lee (Darren Criss).

In this clip, Imogene confronts her mom about the noises coming from her room the night before. Let's just say Zelda is more adventurous in the bedroom, but Imogene just isn't feeling it.

Check out the clip above. "Girl Most Likely" spanks into theaters July 19.

Cory Monteith Dead at 31: Actor Played Addict in Final Film

Cory Monteith

"Glee" star Cory Monteith was found dead in his room at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in Vancouver on July 13.

While the actor's cause of death has not been released, he spent the month of April in rehab for substance addiction -- an issue he'd previously addressed in his late teens and early 20s and discussed frankly in a 2011 interview with Parade.

When he was 19 and using "anything and everything, as much as possible," his mother and friends staged an intervention, he told the magazine. He ended up in rehab for the first time, but then "went back to doing exactly what I left off doing." However, it wasn't long before he hit bottom and then took steps toward recovery.

"I stole a significant amount of money from a family member," he confessed. "I knew I was going to get caught, but I was so desperate I didn't care. It was a cry for help."

Monteith drew on these personal struggles last September while filming the gritty cop drama "McCanick" in Philadelphia. In the movie -- his last -- Monteith played Simon Weeks, a drug-addicted criminal who's spent seven years behind bars on murder charges.

Director Josh C. Waller admits that Monteith, best known for playing jock-turned-singer Finn Hudson on "Glee," wasn't his first choice for the part. "In my mind, I was envisioning a teeny little drug guy [for the role], but Cory Monteith is this tall, strapping man," Waller told the L.A. Times on July 14. "But when I met with him, he wanted to do it so badly. He was very vocal about his past, and said he wanted to tap into things from his youth that he hadn't been able to use as an actor yet."

Waller added, "He didn't say it was a cathartic experience, but you could sense it."

"McCanick" does not yet have a distributor, and Waller hasn't heard back from the Toronto Film Festival about whether or not the film has been accepted. "I want people to see the movie, because Cory deserves that," Waller said. "People would ultimately see that he had a lot more to offer artistically."

Monteith's autopsy is on the fast-track, reports E! News, with a Vancouver Police Department source telling the site to expect the toxicology results in two or three days.

Fox and the "Glee" producers released a statement expressing their shock and sadness -- sentiments echoed throughout Hollywood and on Twitter: "We are deeply saddened by this tragic news. Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones."

Cory Monteith and Lea Michele

Monteith's girlfriend and co-star Lea Michele, 26, is quietly grieving, with her rep exhorting everyone to "kindly respect Lea's privacy during this devastating time."

Michele stood by Monteith when he entered rehab for a monthlong stay on March 31, and then expressed joy when he completed the stint in late April. "Today is a great day:)" she gushed on Twitter. "Love you all! Xo." Dating for a year and a half, the couple made their final red carpet appearance together at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball on June 9.

Monteith, whose other movies include the 2011 rom-com "Monte Carlo" and the yet-to-be-released indie "All the Wrong Reasons," was in Vancouver visiting his mother at the time of his death.
