Fanboys and -girls around the globe are no doubt still celebrating last night's surprising announcement that Sony and Marvel would partner to produce new Spider-Man films, and integrate the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But what does that mean for what was to be Sony's first "Amazing Spider-Man" spinoff, "Sinister Six"?
According to the Wall Street Journal, "Sinister Six" will remain in development at Sony, but it's been delayed indefinitely. WSJ writes that the studio is "rethinking" its plan for the flick, and it has been pulled from its initial release date of November 11, 2016.
While that's never a good sign for a movie, WSJ's report indicates that Sony still wants to move forward with the film, and so far, Drew Goddard ("Cabin in the Woods") is still on board to write and direct. Still, not knowing when the movie may come out may cause some of "Sinister"'s high-profile cast members -- including Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Rhys Ifans, and Dane DeHaan -- to bolt from the project, putting it in even more uncertain waters.
Letting go of the flick might be in Sony's best interest, since one of the driving forces behind its agreement to the Marvel partnership was that the "Amazing Spider-Man" films under-performed; gathering together a group of lesser-known villains from that same universe into a different movie may not have worked out, either. Still, nothing is set in stone yet, and Marvel's production company is known for building hits around unlikely protagonists (see: "Guardians of the Galaxy").
