For the upcoming big-screen adaptation of Gillian Flynn's bestselling novel "Gone Girl," the central mystery isn't "whodunnit?," but which Hollywood actress will play the titular role.
Big names like Reese Witherspoon and Charlize Theron have been linked to the part, but The Hollywood Reporter says that British actress Rosamund Pike ("Jack Reacher," "Wrath of the Titans") is director David Fincher's current frontrunner.
"There's no shortage of women interested, [and it] will just come down to who Fincher wants," a source told THR.
Variety reports that Abbie Cornish, Olivia Wilde, and Julianne Hough are also lined up to meet with the director.
If Pike is cast, she'll star opposite Ben Affleck, whose "Argo" took home the Best Picture Oscar earlier this year. He has signed on to play Nick Dunne, who becomes the main suspect in wife Amy's disappearance on the day of their fifth anniversary. Flynn's novel examines Nick and Amy's broken marriage from alternating points of view.
Affleck's involvement in "Gone Girl" means that his next directing project, an adaptation of Dennis Lehane's "Live By Night," will get pushed back.
