"The Conjuring" has been scaring up such good buzz that the yet-to-be-released horror flick already has a sequel in development.
According to Variety, the James Wan-directed feature has been scoring "off-the-charts test screening results and strong reviews" ahead of its release this Friday, prompting studio New Line to consider green-lighting a sequel -- and a possible franchise.
"The Conjuring" is based on the real-life experiences of married couple Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in the film), whose work as paranormal investigators led them to some terrifying cases, including the true events that inspired movies such as "The Amityville Horror" and "The Haunting in Connecticut."
More of that work could be the basis for a long, continuing line of movies focused on the Warrens' experiences, said New Line president Toby Emmerich.
"We have Lorraine's permission and support, and we are working on developing another film," Emmerich said.
"Horror is very much a part of the DNA of New Line," he added, citing such classics as "Friday the 13th" and "Nightmare on Elm Street." "This is as good a horror movie as we've ever made."
"The Conjuring" opens Friday.
