While nothing is set in stone just yet, a rebooted "Ghostbusters" franchise starring an all-female cast is reportedly in the works -- and Bill Murray is not only on board with that concept, but has some big name casting suggestions for filmmakers.
In a pair of interviews promoting his work in the Toronto International Film Festival flick "St. Vincent," Murray was asked for his thoughts on casting women in a new version of "Ghostbusters, and the comedian had plenty to say.
"It sounds great to me," Murray told Schmoes Know. "It sounds as good an idea as any other! There are a lot of women that could scare off any kind of vapor! No, it's a grand idea. I don't know who they're talking about, but it's a good idea, I would watch it! I mean, I love Robert Palmer's videos, so why wouldn't I love the female 'Ghostbusters'?"
While The Playlist notes that Murray's last crack about Robert Palmer videos is a bit condescending, the actor's enthusiasm does seem genuine. And in another interview, with the Toronto Star, Murray's excitement went one step further, with the comedian offering up a list of suggestions for possible actresses to star in the film.
"Melissa [McCarthy, Murray's co-star in "St. Vincent"] would be a spectacular Ghostbuster," Murray told the Star. "And Kristen Wiig is so funny -- God she's funny! I like this girl Linda Cardellini a lot. And Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there."
"I would go to that movie," Murray added, "and they'd probably have better outfits, too."
As for McCarthy, the actress told the Star that she was flattered by Murray's faith in her, though she said she has not been approached about any such role just yet. McCarthy's frequent collaborator Paul Feig, who directed the actress is her breakout role in "Bridesmaids" and with whom she's currently working on action spoof "Spy," is one of the rumored candidates to direct the flick.
While McCarthy told the Star that she was intimidated by the "Ghostbusters" legacy, she wouldn't shy away from the film if offered -- especially if Wiig, Stone, and Cardellini are involved.
"Oh, my God, that's daunting. That's taking on a legend, a legendary movie," she said. "But I would do anything with those ladies, anything at all."
