The third installment in the "Insidious" series has officially kicked off production, and with it comes a first look image from the new film.
The photo shows the cast crowded into a small, barely-lit room, surrounded by chintzy furniture and clutter. The retro-styled patterns on the furniture suggest a '70s vibe, though there's no clear indication that that's the exact time period in which the movie takes place. If anything, at least one of the shabbily-dressed characters looks like a shut-in, so this could be her rarely visited -- and potentially haunted? -- abode.
Focus Features's official synopsis for the flick calls "Insidious: Chapter 3" "a twisted new tale of terror" that centers around "a teenage girl and her family, predating the haunting of the Lambert family in the earlier movies and revealing more mysteries of the otherworldly realm The Further." Writer-director Leigh Whannell tipped his hand about the new set of characters in an interview earlier this year, noting that filmmakers wanted to enter the third film in the franchise by "wiping the slate clean and starting over again."
Whannell, Angus Sampson, and Lin Shaye are reprising their roles from the first two films. The flick also stars Dermot Mulroney and Stefanie Scott (who's starring in "Jem and the Holograms," another Blumhouse production).

"Insidious: Chapter 3" is due in theaters on May 29, 2015.
