The past few summers have been great times to get scared at the movies, what with offerings like "Sinister," "The Purge," and "The Conjuring" freaking people out in theater across the country. This trailer for "Deliver Us From Evil" looks like we won't be getting a respite from onscreen scares any time soon - and that's a good thing."Sinster" co-writer/director Scott Derrickson is at it again with this story about a cop and a priest and some good, old-fashioned exorcisms. New York City isn't an easy place to live in the best situation, but Officer Ralph Sarchie's beat is filling up with some seriously devilish activity. Played by former comedian Eric Bana, Sarchie is your average cop who puts his job ahead of everything else, and he's not one for any of this supernatural nonsense. That is, until he meets a priest named Mendoza who convinces him that it's not just an uptick in your regular NYC activities; there's something, dare we say, sinister about it all.
Edgar Ramirez, who is currently in negotiations to replay Gerard Butler in the remake of "Point Break," plays Mendoza, who is not a cookie cutter exorcism-obsessed priest. Nope, he's a bad boy priest! And he's gonna do bad boy priest things while Ralph does his bad boy cop things, and together they can rid the city of its demonic scourge before Ralph's daughter and wife get sucked into the mix.
"Deliver Us From Evil" is based the book "Beware the Night," which coincidentally was written by a guy named Ralph Sarchie. Oh... Now we get it. It's based on a true story.
The director and stars appeared at WonderCon for a panel hosted by Nerdist's Chris Hardwick, and they took great pains to describe how Derrickson and Sarchie scared the poop out of them all with footage and other things from their research.
"[Derrickson] had access to some materials, along with Ralph Sarchie, the real guy, that they shared with me that I really wish I hadn't seen." Bana said, admitting that it caused him some sleepless nights. Munn wanted to see the footage of NYPD exorcisms too as soon as she heard how scared Eric was, but boy was she sorry. "I watched them and he was right. I watched half of one and I cried and then I kept the lights on and then they're still on," she told the audience. Hey, some of us have had our lights on since "Sinister" came out, thank you very much.
"Deliver Us From Evil" opens July 2.
