Deadline reports that "Karate Kid 2" is now a go, and original stars Smith and Chan are on board to return. Eisner, known for 2010 horror romp "The Crazies," replaces director Harald Zwart, who helmed the 2010 "Kid," itself a remake of the 1984 flick.

Eisner may seem like an eyebrow-raising choice for a kiddie film like "Karate Kid 2" (in addition to "The Crazies," he also directed 2005's Matthew McConaughey adventure flick "Sahara"), but studio Sony is banking on him to turn the film into a successful franchise. The 2010 "Kid" made over $300 million worldwide throughout its run; Sony's no doubt hoping the second installment will be even more lucrative.

Eisner will next direct the Vin Diesel-starring "The Last Witch Hunter." No word yet on how soon "Karate Kid 2" will start production.
