Farrell joked that his friendship with Taylor was "the last kind of romantic relationship I had, which was never consummated," marked by many late night phone conversations shared by two insomniacs.
The pair first met after both were at an L.A. hospital -- Farrell for the birth of his youngest son, Henry, and Taylor for a medical procedure -- at the same time, and Farrell bumped into friends of Taylor's. Farrell recalled that he asked them to wish her well on his behalf, adding that the Oscar winner probably didn't know who he was; turns out she did, and she very much appreciated his kind words.
After that encounter, Farrell said he called his publicist to send flowers to Taylor, only to find out that she had already sent him an orchid. They met in person for the first time soon after, and began regular late night phone calls that lasted for two years before Taylor passed away in 2011 at age 79.
"We'd talk for a half an hour, an hour, into the wee hours," Farrell said of their conversations, adding that their friendship was "really cool."
"I just adored her," he said. "She was a spectacular, spectacular woman."
